ABSTRACT
Waste from palm shells (6.5% per tonne FFB) and
fibers (13 % per tonne FFB) have dominant cellulose, it makes this waste
potentially used as activated carbon. This research was a modification process
of activated carbon that has been studied and the potential mixture of waste
from palm shells and fibers as an activated carbon can be known; it also
determine the best condition of the process and the characteristics of the
activated carbon that produced from mixed fibers and shells with Na2CO3
activator .
The research was carried out by mixing palm shells
and fibers for 4 h to H3PO4 solutions as an activator using a
stirrer with speed 150 rpm. The ratio of the number shells and fibers is 8: 2.
The process continued with the initial heating at a temperature of 400 0C
for 30 minutes. Then it followed by the purification stages at a temperature of
750 0C for 90 minutes for activating carbon. Then pH from activated
carbon was neutralized. At last, it
dried in an oven at a temperature of 105 0C for 3 hours and then
crushed and screened with a 325 mesh sieve.
The best characteristics of activated carbon as a
result of this research were a mixture of palm shells and fibers with the
activator concentration of 4.5% Na2CO3, which had a
moisture content of 7.3%, ash content of 3.9% and the adsorption power of
activated carbon to the iod solutions of 2369.3 mg / g
Keywords : activated carbon, chemical activation, a
mixture of palm shells and fibers, adsorption power of activated carbon to the
